Best time to cruise by region: Caribbean, Mediterranean, Fjords and Alaska

"Best time" always means the best trade-off between four things: weather, crowds, price and what you want to see. Here's how the major regions behave.

How to think about it

• Shoulder season (just before or after peak) usually gives the best balance.
• Peak season means the best weather but the highest prices and the most people.
• Low season means deals, but more risk of rain or reduced hours at some ports.

Caribbean

The Caribbean has two seasons: a dry season (roughly December to April) and a wet/hurricane season (June to November).

If you cruise in hurricane season, book with a line that has a clear weather-rerouting policy, and consider travel insurance.

Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is sailed from roughly April to October, but the months are very different.

• May and September are the sweet spot: pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds than midsummer.
• July and August are hot and busy, especially in ports like Barcelona, Santorini and Rome.
• April and October are quieter and cheaper, with a higher chance of rain.

Norwegian Fjords and Northern Europe

The season is short: roughly May to September.

• June and July bring the midnight sun — very long days and dramatic light.
• May and September are quieter and still beautiful.
• Fjord cruising is about scenery, so daylight hours matter: midsummer is the best time to sail.

Alaska

Alaska runs roughly May to September.

• May and September are quieter and often cheaper.
• June to August is peak: the best wildlife and the warmest weather.
• Wildlife varies by month: whales and bears are most active in midsummer.

Repositioning and transatlantic cruises

These one-off routes run when ships move between regions (spring and autumn). They're usually cheaper per night, with more sea days and fewer ports.

Booking windows

• Wave season (early in the year) often has the best promotions for the coming year.
• Last-minute can be cheap, but you lose choice of cabin and itinerary.
• Book popular ports and excursions early regardless of season.
