Nassau cruise port guide: what to do and what to skip
A compact Bahamian port with beaches, history and a lively market — and a few tourist traps to avoid.
Nassau is one of the most visited cruise ports in the Caribbean, and with good reason: it's close to Florida, the ship docks right downtown, and you can mix beach, history and a lively market in a single day. It's also a port where a little planning separates a great day from an expensive, crowded one.
Where the ship docks
The revamped Nassau Cruise Port is in the heart of town. You walk off straight into the terminal area and out onto Bay Street, the main shopping street, within minutes. No tender, no long transfer.
The classic day in Nassau
- Bay Street and the Straw Market — souvenirs, crafts and local colour right by the port.
- Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle — a short walk or taxi up the hill for a bit of history and a view.
- Junkanoo Beach — the closest beach to the port, walkable in about 20 minutes.
- Paradise Island — home of Atlantis, reachable by taxi or the bridge.

Atlantis and day passes
Atlantis is the headline attraction on Paradise Island. Access to the resort is limited: you generally need a day pass or an excursion to use the pools and water park, and passes sell out in high season.
If Atlantis is the reason you're in Nassau, book ahead. Turning up on the day often means paying more or being turned away.
Beaches: which one
- Junkanoo Beach: convenient and cheap, but busy and not the prettiest.
- Cable Beach: calmer, nicer sand, a short taxi ride.
- Paradise Island beaches: beautiful, but access can be restricted to resort guests.
What to skip
- Overpriced "tours" sold at the pier that just drive you around and drop you at a beach.
- Buying excursions from touts — book with the ship or a reputable operator.
- Rushing to do everything: traffic between the port and Paradise Island can eat your buffer.
Planning your time
- Half day: downtown + Straw Market + Junkanoo Beach.
- Full day: Atlantis or Cable Beach in the morning, downtown and shopping in the afternoon.
- Nassau is a docked port, so returning is simple — but still plan to be back well before all-aboard.
Practical tips
- Carry cash for taxis, the market and small vendors, plus a card.
- Bahamian and US dollars are used interchangeably; change may come in Bahamian currency.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water; it gets hot and humid.
- Agree the taxi fare and return time before you get in.
Nassau is easy to enjoy if you pick one anchor: a resort day, a beach, or a downtown wander — not all three.
