Skagway cruise port guide: White Pass railway and gold rush
A gold-rush town frozen in time, with a historic railway climbing from the dock into the mountains.
Skagway is a small town with an outsized story: it was the gateway to the Klondike gold rush, and today it feels like a museum you can walk through. The ship docks basically in town, and the star attraction — a historic railway — leaves from right beside the waterfront.
Where you dock
Cruise ships tie up at the edge of town, often along the piers next to the railway depot. You can step off and be on the main street, Broadway, in minutes. There's no shuttle and no long transfer.
Because you dock in town, Skagway is ideal for a mix of a big excursion and independent wandering in the same call.
The White Pass and Yukon Route
The White Pass & Yukon Route is the headline experience: a narrow-gauge railway built during the gold rush that climbs from Skagway over the coast mountains, with steep grades, trestles and sweeping valley views. Most trips are a few hours and run as a scenic out-and-back or a one-way combination.
- Book ahead in peak season; the popular departures sell out.
- Sit on the left side going up for some of the best views (ask on board).
- Dress in layers — it's colder at altitude.
Gold rush history
Skagway's boom years are preserved in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, which includes historic buildings and a visitor centre in town. Walking Broadway, you get a sense of the saloons, outfitters and stampeders that passed through on the way to the Yukon.
Hiking and the outdoors
If you'd rather stretch your legs than ride the rails:
- Lower Dewey Lake — a short, popular hike above town.
- Yakutania Point — an easy walk with views over the inlet.
- The Chilkoot Trail trailhead is nearby, though the full route is a multi-day trek.
Gold Rush Cemetery and Reid Falls
A short walk north of town, the Gold Rush Cemetery and the nearby Reid Falls make an easy independent detour with a bit of local legend. It's a gentle way to add history and a short hike to a railway day, and both are walkable from the docks.

- Rain is common — bring a waterproof layer even for the train.
- The town is small and flat: you can see a lot on foot.
