St. Lucia is the green, dramatic island of the Windwards: volcanic peaks, rainforest and the twin Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ship docks in Castries, and the real St. Lucia — Soufrière, the Pitons and the volcano — is on the west coast, so the day is about choosing what to prioritise.
Where the ship docks
Ships dock at one of two berths in Castries: Pointe Seraphine or La Place Carenage. Both are docked ports, so you walk off into a terminal with shops and taxis.
- The centre of Castries is close to La Place Carenage.
- A water taxi or a short ride links the two berths and the town.
- Island tours and catamarans leave from the port area.
Getting around
Roads on St. Lucia are winding, and the journey to Soufrière can take an hour or more each way. That single fact shapes your plan: many travellers see the Pitons and the volcano by catamaran rather than by road, which is faster on the water and includes the scenery from the sea.
If the Pitons are the reason you're here, a boat to Soufrière usually beats a road tour — and it hands you the classic view of the peaks rising straight out of the sea.

Food and shopping
Look for green fig and saltfish, grilled fish, cocoa and fresh tropical fruit. Castries has a lively market and duty-free shops; the craft market at Pointe Seraphine is handy before you reboard.
Planning your time
- Half day (3–4 h): Pigeon Island and a north-coast beach, or Castries and a nearby beach.
- Full day (6–8 h): a catamaran to Soufrière for the Pitons and volcano.
- Choose one direction — north for beaches, south for the Pitons — and don't try both.
Practical tips
- Carry cash for taxis, entrance fees and market stalls, plus a card.
- Bring water, sun protection and seasickness tablets if you take the boat along the coast.
- Allow generous travel time on the winding roads.
- Leave a buffer before all-aboard: island drives and boat schedules can run long.
- Roads are narrow and bus journeys are slow, so a taxi or an organised tour is easier if you're short on time.
