St. Thomas cruise port guide: Charlotte Amalie and Magens Bay
Duty-free Charlotte Amalie, the famous Magens Bay and the St. John option — with the two cruise piers explained.
St. Thomas is one of the most popular stops in the eastern Caribbean, and it packs a lot into a small island: a historic harbour town, some genuinely beautiful beaches and the best duty-free shopping in the region. The catch is that the day can go to shopping, beaches or a neighbouring island — but rarely all three.
Where the ship docks
St. Thomas has two cruise piers, and which one you use shapes your day:
- Havensight: the busier pier, with shops and restaurants right at the dock, about a mile from Charlotte Amalie.
- Crown Bay: further west, quieter, and a good starting point for the beaches on the west side.
From either pier you can walk (Havensight) or take a short taxi or safari bus into Charlotte Amalie, the capital.
Charlotte Amalie and duty-free shopping
Charlotte Amalie wraps around a harbour dotted with yachts, with narrow streets climbing the hillside. Main Street is the shopping artery: jewellery, watches, perfume and spirits, much of it duty-free.
St. Thomas is a US territory, so the currency is the US dollar and there are generous duty-free allowances for many visitors — check your own limits before you buy.
Beyond shopping, look for the colourful 99 Steps, the old fort area and the waterfront, all walkable from the centre.
Magens Bay and the beaches
Magens Bay is the island's headline beach: a long, gentle crescent of calm water, ideal for families and easy swimming. It is a short taxi ride over the hill from the north side of town. Other options include Lindqvist Beach and the west-side coves near Crown Bay.

Paradise Point and St. John
For quick views without leaving town, the Skyride cable car up to Paradise Point gives you a panorama over the harbour. For a bigger day, a ferry to St. John and its national-park beaches, such as Trunk Bay, is one of the best excursions in the Caribbean — but it needs a full day and careful timing.
Food and drink
Expect seafood, Caribbean plates and casual dockside bars. The local speciality to look for is a painkiller cocktail, and conch fritters appear on many menus. Around Havensight there is plenty of choice within walking distance of the ship.
Planning your time
- Half day: Charlotte Amalie for shopping and a wander, then Paradise Point for the view.
- Full day: Magens Bay in the morning, town and shopping in the afternoon.
- Alternative full day: a ferry to St. John, if you are confident about the return timing.
- Note that traffic between the piers and town can be slow; build in a buffer.
