Tallinn cruise port guide: the medieval old town
One of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, and a port where you can be inside the walls in minutes.
Tallinn is one of the great surprises of a Baltic cruise: a medieval old town so well preserved it feels like a film set, and a port so convenient that you can be walking through the city walls within minutes of leaving the ship. For many passengers it is the most atmospheric stop of the itinerary.
Where the ship docks
Cruise ships berth at the Old City Harbour, close to the centre. Depending on the pier, the old town is roughly a 15–20 minute walk, or a short taxi ride. This makes Tallinn one of the easiest ports to explore independently — no tour required for the highlights.
Tallinn is a docked port with the old town close by, so a guided tour is optional. Most of the main sights are inside walkable walls.
The medieval old town
The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its core splits into two parts:
- Toompea — the upper town on the hill, home to the castle and the best viewpoints.
- The lower town — the merchants' quarter, with the Town Hall Square at its centre.
The two are linked by short, steep lanes, so wear shoes you can trust on cobbles.
Toompea and the viewpoints
Toompea rises above the rest of the city and offers some of the best views, looking down over red roofs and church spires. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with its domed towers, is one of the most striking buildings here, sitting right opposite the seat of government.

The Town Hall Square
Back down in the lower town, the Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is the heart of the old city, ringed by historic buildings and cafés. It is the natural place to pause, and the lanes around it hide guildhalls, towers and small museums.

- Half day: add the city walls, viewpoints and a museum.

Practical tips
- Wear comfortable shoes; the cobbles are uneven and the lanes are steep.
- The old town is compact, so it is easy to cover on foot without transport.
- Cards are widely accepted, and English is common in the tourist centre.
- Leave a buffer before all-aboard — it is a short walk back, but crowds can slow you.
