Athens from Piraeus: cruise port guide
The Acropolis, Plaka and the old centre are within reach on a port day — if you plan the transfer from Piraeus.
Piraeus is the port of Athens, but it is not Athens: it is a large city in its own right, about 10 km southwest of the historic centre. The good news is that Piraeus is well connected by metro and bus, so the Acropolis is genuinely within reach on a port day — as long as you plan for the transfer and pace yourself.
Where your ship docks
Most cruise ships berth in the large Piraeus port complex, either at the main passenger terminals or further out near the ferry and container areas. Where exactly you dock matters: some berths are a 20–30 minute walk from the nearest metro station, others a short shuttle ride. Check your ship's daily programme and look for the terminal shuttle if your berth is far.
Piraeus is a working port. Distances inside it can be long and signage is not always obvious — follow the other passengers and the crew's advice.
Getting to central Athens
Two options dominate:
- Metro: the green line (Line 1) runs from Piraeus into central Athens, with stops near Monastiraki and Omonia. It is the simplest way in if your berth is near a station.
- Bus or taxi: both connect the port with the centre. A taxi is faster and more direct, especially if you are short on time or travelling as a group.
The journey from Piraeus to the centre usually takes around 20–30 minutes by metro, and similar by road outside rush hour. Allow more at peak times.

The Acropolis and the ancient centre
The Acropolis is the headline and it is a steep, uneven climb: the last stretch is on slippery marble and stone steps with little shade. Wear shoes with grip and start early if it is hot. At busy periods tickets are timed or capacity-limited, so book ahead in high season.
Below it, the ancient centre is compact: the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora and Hadrian's Library are all walkable and often quieter than the Acropolis itself.
Plaka, Monastiraki and the changing of the guard
Once you have come down, Plaka is the old neighbourhood at the foot of the Acropolis, full of cafés and tavernas, and the perfect place for a slow lunch.
From Plaka it is a short walk to Syntagma Square, where the changing of the guard takes place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the parliament. A smaller ceremony happens regularly through the day, and a larger, more elaborate version usually runs on Sunday mornings. It is free to watch and lasts only a few minutes.
Nearby, Monastiraki has a lively flea market and street food, and is a good final stop before heading back to Piraeus.
A realistic plan for a port day
- Short call (4–5 h): metro to the centre, Acropolis and Plaka, then straight back.
- Full day (6–8 h): add the Ancient Agora, a proper lunch in Plaka and the changing of the guard at Syntagma.
- Do not try to add a museum and the coast as well — Athens traffic punishes overplanning.

Practical tips
- Book Acropolis tickets in advance in high season.
- Carry water and sun protection; the site has little shade.
- Keep cash for taxis and small vendors, plus a card.
- Leave a generous buffer — the return trip to Piraeus can slow down in traffic.
