Grand Cayman cruise port guide: tenders, Seven Mile Beach and Stingray City
A tender port with world-class sand and reef — here's how to plan a real day ashore without missing the boat.
Grand Cayman is the Caribbean postcard you have seen a hundred times: impossibly clear water, white sand and a reef full of life. It is also a tender port, so your day runs to the rhythm of small boats rather than a gangway. Plan around that and you can fit George Town, Seven Mile Beach and even Stingray City into a single call.
How you arrive: tenders into George Town
Ships anchor in the sheltered harbour off George Town and shuttle passengers ashore by tender. The crossing is short, but loading and unloading take time, and queues are longest first thing in the morning and again before the final boats back.
The last tender usually leaves well before all-aboard. Treat that time, not the ship's departure, as your real deadline.
Once ashore you step out into the heart of George Town, with shops, the waterfront and taxis all within a couple of minutes.

Seven Mile Beach

The northern end, closer to the resorts, tends to be livelier; the southern end is quieter. Most people take a taxi, a minibus or a short excursion, then settle in for a relaxed few hours.

Stingray City and the reef
Stingray City is a shallow sandbar in the North Sound where rays gather in numbers you will not forget; it is reached only by boat, so it needs a proper half-day. Snorkelling and diving along the reef are world-class, and many visitors rate the underwater life here above the beach itself.
Food and shopping
George Town is known for duty-free shopping — watches, jewellery and spirits — and for casual waterfront restaurants serving seafood, fish tacos and the local rum cake. Prices are generally high, so compare before you buy.
Planning your time
- Half day: tender ashore, explore George Town and spend a few hours on Seven Mile Beach.
- Full day: add a boat trip to Stingray City or a snorkel stop, then return to town for shopping.
- Because of tendering, always leave a generous buffer at the end of the day.
