The history of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores church in Viña del Mar

Viña del Mar's oldest church is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, known simply as the Parroquia de Viña. It stands in the city centre, beside the station, and its story runs from a private chapel on the old estates to the neo-Romanesque temple that still serves the city today.

The first chapel on the estates

The church began with Dolores Pérez de Álvarez, owner of the haciendas that became Viña del Mar, who funded a chapel in memory of her husband. The first stone was laid in the early 1870s, and the chapel was dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Our Lady of Sorrows, and to Saint Francis of Assisi.

From chapel to parish

The growing town needed a proper parish, and in the early 1880s the chapel was raised to the status of a public church, serving not only Viña del Mar but also nearby places such as Concón and Peñablanca. The first building was designed in a neoclassical style, with two towers on its façade, and it became the young city's main place of worship.

Earthquake and rebirth

In 1906 a powerful earthquake struck the region and damaged the church badly, and the building had to be demolished. A fundraising campaign followed, and a new temple was designed by the architect Emilio Jecquier, who also worked on major public buildings elsewhere in Chile.

  • 1906: the earthquake leaves the first church in ruins.
  • Rebuild: a public campaign funds a replacement.
  • 1912: the new church is inaugurated and opens for worship.

The church you see today

The present temple is neo-Romanesque, with touches of neo-Gothic, and it is built around a tall central tower. Inside, the columns, arches and stained glass give it a solemn, historic character. The stained-glass windows were donated by local families, and some commemorate people important to the city's early years.

Look for the stained glass: many windows were gifts from the families who shaped Viña del Mar, which makes the church a kind of civic portrait in glass.

A church with a Chilean story

The parish is also known for a remarkable detail of national history: the Chilean saint Alberto Hurtado was baptised here as a child. The font is preserved in the church, and a monument to the saint stands nearby, in the small plaza beside the temple.
