The history of Viña del Mar: from estate to Chile's resort city

Viña del Mar began as farmland by the sea and became Chile's most famous resort city. Its name, vineyard by the sea, recalls the estates that once covered the land, and its history is the story of how those estates were transformed into gardens, avenues and a seaside resort.

The estates behind the name

Before the city, there were haciendas. The land that is now Viña del Mar belonged to large rural properties, including Las Siete Hermanas and Viña de la Mar. These estates ran from the coast inland, and their names survive in the city's streets, neighbourhoods and institutions.

Dolores Pérez de Álvarez

One of the key figures was Dolores Pérez de Álvarez, owner of the estates, who set aside land for the young settlement's first church. Her decision was part of a wider pattern: the founding of a town requires not just houses but institutions, and the church gave the growing community a centre. For the story of that first church, see our history of the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.

The founding of the city

Viña del Mar was formally founded in the early 1870s, the work of José Francisco Vergara, who saw the potential of the coast between the estuary and the sea. Around that time the railway reached the area, connecting it to Valparaíso and the interior, and the town began to grow in earnest.

  • 1870s: the town is founded and the first institutions appear.
  • Railway: the line links the coast with Valparaíso and the valley.
  • Resort years: wealthy families build villas and gardens by the sea.

From town to resort

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Viña del Mar became fashionable. Families from Santiago and Valparaíso built houses and gardens along the coast, and the city invested in parks, avenues and seafront promenades. That is where its garden-city character comes from.

A century of landmarks

Estate yearsThe names and boundaries of the old haciendas

Viña del Mar grew by design: it was imagined as a garden city by the sea, and it has spent more than a century living up to that image.

Viña del Mar today

The result is a city that is both a working town and a holiday destination. Its gardens, its long coastline and its cultural life are the direct inheritance of the estate years and the resort boom. To see those gardens in person, start with the Viña del Mar guide, and for the city beside it, the Valparaíso city guide.

Practical tips

  • Look for the estate names in street and neighbourhood names across the city.
  • Walk the central parks and the seafront to read the garden-city plan.
  • Pair the history with a visit to Quinta Vergara and the coast.
  • The city's museums and mansions tell the resort story in more detail.

Viña del Mar is a rare thing: a city that knew what it wanted to be, and largely became it. Its history is written in its gardens.
