Roatán cruise port guide: Mahogany Bay, West Bay and the reef
A laid-back Bay Islands stop with two cruise piers, superb snorkelling on the Mesoamerican reef and a famous beach at West Bay.
Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, a green, hilly strip of land fringed by one of the best reefs in the Caribbean. It has become a favourite cruise stop for exactly that reason: you can be swimming over coral within an hour of stepping off the ship, and the pace stays unhurried.
Where the ship docks
Roatán has two cruise piers, and where you dock shapes your day:
- Mahogany Bay: a purpose-built cruise centre with its own beach, shops and a chairlift, on the island's south coast.
- Town Center / Coxen Hole: the island's main town, closer to the local shops, markets and taxis.
Both piers are secure and easy to navigate, but the reef and the best beaches are on the west end, so most people take a taxi or a water taxi to get there.
West Bay and West End
These two spots are the heart of a Roatán beach day:
- West Bay: a long curve of white sand with calm, clear water, widely regarded as the island's best beach.
- West End: a relaxed village of dive shops, bars and small hotels, with snorkelling right off the shore.
- Half Moon Bay: a sheltered, pretty bay beside West End.
The travel time by road between the piers and West Bay can vary a lot with traffic, so plan it into your day.

The reef
Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and the diving and snorkelling are the main event. The reef is close enough to shore in places that you can swim out from West Bay or West End, though a boat trip reaches the healthiest coral.
Never stand on or touch the reef, and use reef-safe sunscreen. The reef is the reason people come here, and it is fragile.
Wildlife and land excursions
Away from the water, Roatán offers a range of easy excursions:
- Wildlife and nature parks with monkeys, sloths and birds.
- Iguana and bird sanctuaries for a quick, family-friendly stop.
- Mangrove and glass-bottom boat tours for a gentler look at the coast.
- Zipline and canopy adventures in the island's hills.
Food and shopping
Expect Caribbean and Honduran cooking: fresh seafood, conch, coconut and grilled fish. Around the cruise centres and West End there are plenty of casual spots. The local currency is the lempira, but US dollars are widely accepted.
Planning your time
- Half day: Mahogany Bay beach, or a short transfer to West Bay for a swim.
- Full day: West Bay beach plus a snorkel trip on the reef, or a wildlife excursion and beach.
- If you dock at Mahogany Bay and stay there, your day is simple — but you miss the reef.
- Build in a buffer for traffic on the road to the west end.
Practical tips
- Bring cash for taxis, water taxis and small vendors.
- Carry reef-safe sunscreen and consider a rash guard.
