- You're comfortable building in a buffer and returning early.
- The same tour is much cheaper independently.
When DIY is best
- The ship docks in or beside the city.
- You want to wander, eat and shop at your own pace.
- You're confident with local transport and maps.
How to do an independent tour safely
- Book with a reputable operator with good reviews.
- Tell them you're on a cruise and give your all-aboard time.
- Choose tours that start later or are flexible.
- Return with a large buffer — never aim for the last tender.
- Save the port agent's contact details.
Mix and match
You don't have to be consistent. Many experienced cruisers:
