The Western Mediterranean is one of the most popular cruise regions in the world: art cities, islands and beaches packed into a single itinerary, with short distances between ports. It's also intense — the ports are big and the highlights are often a transfer from the ship.
What a Western Med itinerary usually covers
A classic 7-night loop might include:
- Spain: Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia.
- France: Marseille, Cannes, Ajaccio (Corsica).
- Italy: Rome (Civitavecchia), Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Naples, Genoa, Palermo.
- Malta: Valletta.
Some routes lean west (Spain + France), others east within the west (Italy + Malta). Read the port list, not just the region name.
The big question: city vs beach
Western Med ports fall into two types:

When to sail
- April to October, with May and September the sweet spot: warm, less crowded.
- July and August are hot and busy — plan early starts and shade.
- April and October are quieter and cheaper, with more rain risk.
A sample 7-night plan
- Barcelona — Gothic Quarter or GaudÃ.
- Sea day — rest between big ports.
- Rome — long day; pick one or two highlights.
- Naples — Pompeii, Capri or the city itself.
- Florence/Pisa — book a timed ticket for the Uffizi or the tower.
- Palma or Marseille — old town and a beach.
- Valletta — a compact, walkable capital.
How to plan port days
- One anchor activity per port. Big Med cities punish overplanning.
- Book timed tickets (Vatican, Uffizi, Sagrada FamÃlia) well in advance.
- Watch the heat in summer: do the outdoor site first, then indoor.
- Use ship excursions for far cities; go independent where the port is close.
Practical tips
- Carry euros in Spain, France, Italy and Malta.
- Learn a few words in local languages — ports span several countries.
- Expect lots of walking on cobblestones and stairs.
- Keep a buffer for traffic between the port and the city.
