Naples is one of the best-connected cruise ports in the Mediterranean. The ship docks right in the city, and from there you can reach Roman ruins, a glamorous island and one of the world's most famous coastlines — all in a single day, if you choose well.
The port is in the city
Unlike Rome or Florence, Naples puts you downtown. The historic centre, the waterfront and the ferry terminal at Molo Beverello are within walking distance, which makes independent exploring genuinely easy.
Pompeii and Herculaneum
The two Roman towns buried by Vesuvius are the classic Naples excursion.
- Pompeii is larger and more famous, with streets and houses on a grand scale.
- Herculaneum is smaller, better preserved and closer to the city.
- Mount Vesuvius can be added by those who want to look into the crater.
Both sites are very exposed to the sun, so go early and carry water.
Capri
Capri is a short ferry ride from the port and a full-day destination in itself: the town, the gardens, the famous sea stacks and the water. Ferries are frequent, but the island is busy in high season and last boats matter.
The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is spectacular and far. A day trip to Positano and Amalfi means a long drive on winding roads, so this is where a ship excursion earns its keep. Sorrento is a gentler option with much of the same scenery.
Naples itself
Don't overlook the city you are standing in:
- The historic centre and its churches and chapels.
- Spaccanapoli, the long straight street through the old town.
- Pizza, which was born here.
